You may have heard that The REFRESH is currently on hiatus. After more than 45 weeks (Shows # 61 - 106), our venue, The Late Late Bar, had issues with the local community board when attempting to renew its liquor license last week and as a result had to abruptly cancel our show. We hope to be back in the Fall 2017. Always check itstheREFRESH.com for the latest info.
Today, I released a new DJ mix, called Pieces Of My Heart (Mix). Clocks in at 92 minutes and is a thematic mix about love and heartbreak, based on the Japanese concept of Kintsukuroi, the idea of repairing broken ceramics with powdered gold filling their cracks and thus making them more beautiful than before. It was premiered earlier today along with a nice interview and feature on Vashtie.com. The cover art is an original painting by my friend Ambi (with additional design from Sajjad).
Many of you may have already heard that sadly the venue Meridian 23 closed last month after someone bought the entire building.
The REFRESH had an incredible time there building our radio show / afterwork event for more than a year. 60 weekly shows with over 50 special guest DJs from NYC and around the world.... and all the amazing people that created the community.... But things change. Especially in NYC.
SO THIS MONDAY, June 6, we're back at a new spot on Houston Street in the LES/East Village (across the street from the F train, near the J,M,Z,B,D too). We'll be right there in the front window broadcasting live. Happy hour drinks will be flowing. Good vibes, good people... and there will be a very special $6 cocktail called "The Refresh"
And we have very special guest DJ and renaissance woman, the very talented Ms. Nix with us to warm up the new place. Come through this Monday if you can cause we want to show the new venue that listening & vibing out to awesome refreshing soulful music along with like-minded warm & creative people can happen on a Monday. We can keep culture/connection alive in the heart of Manhattan. If you never came to the old spot, here's a taste of what you missed. Video shot & edited by Brian Petchers; music from Callum Connor and Jeftuz.
I can't believe it's been a year of The REFRESH already. So many old friends have passed through on 23rd St -- and I've been unbelievably blessed to meet and become friends with so many new amazing people through this project.
Our archive at itstheREFRESH.com is always at your fingertips when you're looking for great music to listen to (click onListen or on the SoundCloud icon) to hear all the previous shows -- my set is always the first hour -- special guest sets every week... almost 150 hours of music! Here's our most recent show: soundcloud.com/notesandbeats/the-refresh-radio-show-52
This Monday, March 21, we celebrate our 1-year Anniversary in collaboration with DJ for a Cure, and with special guest DJs Moma and Vashtie.
For those of you in NYC, we hope to see you there. (And definitely check out the really nice video flyer by Uyen, above.)
My feature article -- 6,500 words -- on the L.A.-based label, radio show and collective, Soulection, was published last week on Forbes. I'm very proud of the story and it's the kind of journalism I like, i.e. detailed and thorough work. It tells the inspirational entrepreneurial story of the music startup from its beginnings to the present day, and it was published in the days leading up to Soulection's 5th anniversary. It's long, but hopefully you enjoy it and you become inspired to do what you love, follow your passions and be true to your highest self and purpose.
